What were universities like in the Middle Ages?

Universities first appeared in Europe during the 11th and 12th century. The university's allowed a wider variety of subjects. Students could continue studies longer were being established by church. Univeresitites allowed students to learn different subjects such as Arithmetic, Grammar, Geometry, Music, etc. At the universities students learned new things and advanced to learn more advanced things in subjects like Grammar or Arithmetic. The only way to get into universities was to be rich or do good and advanced on in school and sooner or later go to a university.
Universities were considerd an institution of higher learning and the people that learned there were smart and more advanced. Universities did not have a campus, classes were available where there was free space. Universtities were structured along different types, depending on who paid the teacher the one type is Bologna, another type was Paris. Universtity studies took six years to get a Bachelors degree and up to twelve to get a masters degree. Courses were offered to books not by subject or theme and courses were not elective.
